Pacific Heights Housing Co-operative

Location

Vancouver, BC

The challenge presented by this project was to rejuvenate and retain eight existing heritage homes, while accommodating high-density housing adjacent to the site.

Completed in 1985, this 91-suite, co-operative housing project is located on Pacific Street in Vancouver’s West End.  The site was originally occupied by a row of turn-of-the-century houses that together formed a significant landmark streetscape.  Eight of these houses were restored and grouped in pairs at the front of the site.  Each house contains two family suites with ground level access, while another 75 suites house a mix of family, singles, seniors, and handicapped accessible suites in a new seven-storey building behind.

This RAIC Governor General award winner maintains the landmark quality of the site while providing high-density affordable housing for additional tenants. The site plan was developed specifically to maximize usable open space and to create the best noise reduction for the majority of units and open spaces.
