Are you driven by impact?
At hcma, we want to live in a world where people feel connected to their communities. Where we can work together to make a lasting difference to the issues that matter. Design alone can’t fix them. Nor strategy, architecture, or engagement. But together, our combined expertise can make a difference.
Bring your curiosity
Curiosity is a big part of our approach, because it helps us create the lasting impact we want to see in the world. Our Tilt curiosity lab is just one of the many ways we encourage each other to challenge conventions and explore new thinking. Curious to learn more? Architect / Technologist
Who is design for? At hcma, we’re asking big questions about how we can help solve some of the world’s wicked challenges, through design. We create buildings, brands and shared experiences that connect people – all driven by a genuine spirit of curiosity and care.
We are interdisciplinary by intention. Designers, architects, researchers, strategists and others, all working together to create the lasting change we want to see in our communities.
And that’s where (we hope!) you come in.
About the role
At hcma, we’re deeply committed to design excellence across all phases of a project. Technical Design is an ongoing, critical process that spans all stages of a project, one that not only produces construction documentations, but also refines, strengthens, and defends the design concept through technical rigour.
Sitting at the heart of the Technical Design process, this role focuses on translating design intent into technically resolved solutions and producing clear, thoughtful, and buildable construction documents. You’ll take ownership of portions of drawing packages, contribute to technical problem-solving, and collaborate closely with architects, consultants, and project teams across a range of institutional and residential projects.
This role is suited to technically minded architects or technologists who enjoy working deeply in technical design and documentation, who take pride in producing clear, coordinated, and well-considered documents that support high-quality buildings and meaningful community outcomes
What you’ll do
- Apply strong technical judgment to detailing, constructability, and technical resolution
- Develop and contribute to coordinated construction documentation across project phases
- Carry out technical research, systems coordination, and product evaluation
- Participate in design reviews and technical problem-solving alongside architects and senior technologists
- Coordinate with consultants and support interdisciplinary collaboration
- Contribute to the development and refinement of technical standards and best practices
- Support Construction Administration activities, where applicable (experience an asset)
What you’ll bring
- A diploma in Architectural Technology or a professional degree in Architecture, with a strong technical focus
- A minimum of five years post-graduation experience in a similar role
- Professional registration (or progress toward registration as an Architect or Architectural Technologist) is considered an asset
- A passion for architecture, with experience contributing to the design process through technical resolution, research of systems and products, and support for constructability and sustainability
- An appreciation for high-quality architectural design, and care in carrying design intent through all levels of detailing
- Demonstrated experience detailing larger-scale institutional projects and/or residential projects, including market and multi-family housing
- A strong understanding of how to assemble clear, coordinated construction document sets
- High proficiency in Revit (AutoCAD and Rhino considered assets)
- Knowledge of the BC or Alberta Building Code and its application to construction detailing
- The ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative, team-based environment
- A curious mindset and interest in learning, with a willingness to ask questions, explore possibilities, and keep growing your practice
- Clear communication skills and confidence working with consultants and stakeholders
Salary range: $70,000 - $95,000
If you’re excited by the opportunity to contribute your skills and be part of a thoughtful, collaborative team doing meaningful work, we’d welcome your application.
