Today, we celebrate five capable leaders as they step into new roles as Associate Principals at hcma. These appointments reflect their significant contributions to our practice and projects – as well as our commitment to empowering a new generation of leaders who will positively shape the communities we serve.

Join us in congratulating Adam Fawkes, Rance Mok, Daniel Philippot, Michael Rivest, and Kim Winston. These long-time hcma-ers each bring unique perspectives and expertise that will continue to drive our mission of creating welcoming spaces where all can thrive.

Adam Fawkes will focus on developing and expanding the work of our Victoria office, having served Vancouver Island communities and beyond for more than 25 years. Adam’s construction experience and his cooperative, team approach have been key to developing design solutions that are constructible, cost effective and architecturally expressive. He has specialized expertise in sustainable architecture and diverse building types – including mixed-use civic buildings that integrate housing and target ambitious environmental goals such as LEED Platinum, Passive House and net zero energy. As Associate Principal, we know Adam will continue to challenge the industry to find holistic solutions for people and the planet.

Rance Mok and Kim Winston will co-lead our K-12 Learning Environments work, taking a dynamic role in shaping the schools of tomorrow. They will build on hcma’s legacy of successful K-12 projects, including the recently-completed mass timber wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary School and forthcoming Quw’utsun Secondary School. Kim and Rance are vocal advocates for meaningfully inclusive and accessible spaces, both as speakers at national education design conferences, and through a design approach that seeks to reduce as many physical and social barriers as possible. They have extensive experience working on successful community projects, and our clients will benefit from their delivery of design excellence and project management proficiency. Rance and Kim are true community builders – on projects, they help foster long-term trust between clients, consultants, and contractors; in office, they are always keen to help mentor fellow hcma-ers.

With extensive post-secondary project experience spanning 25 years, Daniel Philippot will co-lead our Higher Education work. Dan is a strong communicator who thrives leading large and diverse stakeholder groups; he navigates complex needs through the lens of curiosity and creativity. His approach ensures design teams think beyond today’s challenges, to create lasting solutions for vibrant, healthy communities – on campus and beyond.

Michael Rivest has led our Edmonton office since we first opened our doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. His passion for building community and connections in his home city has translated into a growing portfolio of exciting projects, including Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre – recently recognized with a 2024 World Architecture Festival Award for future sport projects. In addition to large projects, he has also led numerous smaller interventions such as ‘Confetti’ at Michael Phair Park, winner of a City of Edmonton Urban Design Award. His leadership as Associate Principal will be key to delivering thoughtful, impactful design throughout Alberta.

These new Associate Principals reflect our ongoing commitment to strengthening senior leadership and mentorship across our practice. With Adam, Rance, Kim, Daniel, and Michael joining the senior leadership team and helping to champion key areas of our work, we look forward to the continued impact they will have at hcma, and within our communities.

Please join us in celebrating their leadership and the exciting new chapter ahead.
