It’s official—hcma has landed in Calgary!
Many of us have close ties to this dynamic city. Some of us grew up here, some of us studied here, and some of us now call Calgary home. With these roots comes a dedication to creating positive change in a city we know and love.
Here, we’ll continue forging meaningful relationships with the people that make Calgary special. We’re excited to contribute to Calgary’s thriving design scene, collaborating with other architects, engineers, designers, and artists.
And most importantly, we’ll keep engaging with local communities, diving deep into their challenges, aspirations, and desires, and always designing by first asking, “Who is this for?”
Meet Darin, Associate Principal at hcma
Our Calgary office is led by Darin Harding, Associate Principal at hcma. Originally hailing from Edmonton, Darin joined us in 2017 and has since led a range of community and higher ed projects including the Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre, Golden and Area Aquatic Centre, and the University of Windsor Toldo Lancer Centre.
With Darin leading the way, we’re looking to grow our Calgary team! If you enjoy weaving curiosity and positive social impact into the future of architectural thinking, we want to hear from you. Visit our Careers page for the full list of job postings.
“Calgary is a place committed to advancing accessible and inclusive design, exploring pathways toward green building, and maximizing positive social impact. We’ve experienced it firsthand, as both residents and visitors. We’re excited to be part of this creative force, to nurture relationships, and discover new opportunities to spark lasting change in Alberta’s Blue-Sky City.”
Darin Harding, Associate Principal, hcma
The next chapter of our prairies story
While our office has just opened its doors, we’ve already hit the ground running. Walden Fire Station and Library (in collaboration with Hereby) and the Armour Block Integrated Facility (in collaboration with Hindle Architects) are two of our ongoing Calgary projects that we’re eager to realize. Our Edmonton office has grown steadily since 2020 with Associate Principal Michael Rivest at the helm. With these southern Alberta projects now on the go, it only made sense to establish a permanent base in Calgary and further cement our presence in Alberta.
You can find us downtown at 1900—700 2 St SW.
Here’s to new beginnings, Calgary. We can’t wait to grow with you.
Land acknowledgement
The lands that are now called Calgary are the traditional, ancestral territories of the Treaty 7 signatories, which includes the Siksika Nation; Piikani Nation; Kainai Nation; the Îethka Stoney Nakoda consisting of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Good Stoney Bands; and the Tsuut’ina Nation. It is also the homeland of the Northwest Métis, Otipemisiwak, Métis Government, Métis Nation Battle River Territory, Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6. We make this acknowledgement as a gesture of respect, peace, and friendship to these nations, whose ancestors have lived and continued to live as faithful stewards.
This acknowledgement also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and ongoing presence of Indigenous peoples, and a recognition of the history, traditions, and contributions of those who have called this land home for thousands of years. As we open our new office, we hold in mind the responsibility to recognize and honour these nations, and affirm our commitment to building relationships on a foundation of mutual respect, understanding, and gratitude.
