Granville Island 2040 Land Use Vision

Location

Vancouver, BC

For nearly 40 years, Granville Island has been a cherished community asset, a shining example of creative energy and innovative thinking converging in a public space. In 2016, we were engaged to help create a long-range land-use vision plan to guide how the island develops and thrives over the next 25 years. Together with a dynamic team of specialists we developed a plan to reinvigorate the island with new energy, to welcome new ideas, and to reinforce Granville Island’s founding vision.

Our Response

Our final report was submitted to the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC) in early 2017. The findings were used in ‘Granville Island 2040: Bridging Past & Future’, a comprehensive vision published online by the CMHC. Their aim is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the island – economically, socially and environmentally – and to preserve its identity and core values. Strategies outlined include: Improve access; expand the Public Market and create a market district; embrace arts and innovation and restore and sustain the public realm.
