Introducing təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre

We're thrilled to celebrate the opening of the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre in New Westminster. The doors just opened in May, and it's already making an impact.

The facility is a culmination of bold ambitions and a strong conviction to truly deliver value for the residents of New West. Today, it's Canada's first completed Zero Carbon Building - Design Certified aquatic centre, and a model for the CaGBC to shape and redefine zero carbon design standards for aquatic centres across the country. The future is a little brighter because of this building.

Despite a fair share of challenges and uncertainty, it was made possible by a north star, something we could follow when the going got tough, and the decisions got even tougher.

That north star was a shared vision for a building that would become the new living, beating heart of New Westminster, to be the axis around which this part of the world would turn. A building that was as kind for the planet as it was for people. A building that did not compromise on its commitment to be a place for all members of the community. A building that stood tall and reflected the pride community members have in this place they call home.

We are very proud of this project. But that’s not what really counts. What matters is the kids that run through the front door and press their noses against the glass, inspired by the teenagers dropping 3’s on the basketball court. The recent newcomer to Canada who is struggling to find their place, but comes here and finds a conversation and some company. The grandmother who misses her grandkids, but can sit here in this space and take joy from the sound of other children playing. This is for them. It’s where this journey started, and that’s why we are here today.

To the City of New Westminster, the entire design and construction team, and the surrounding community who placed their unwavering faith and support in us. Thank you.
