Wei Wai Kum Language and Culture Centre

Location

Wei Wai Kum (Campbell River, BC)

Wei Wai Kum First Nation is developing a Language and Culture Centre for their community in the Campbell River region. It's intended to be a place of healing through interaction and connection to culture, and a holistic learning centre that weaves together Elders, youth, language, and traditional knowledge, fostering a sense of pride in self-identity.

This will be a culturally relevant community facility that integrates existing and future community services programming. The facility will focus on providing opportunities to learn the Liq’wala language and share Liqwiltokw culture, intending to offer spaces such as a learning resource centre and a language centre. It also aims to support —and build connections between — Elders, youth, and families as a whole. Toward that end, spaces such as a youth centre, child & family consult room, and Elders’ lounge are planned. These spaces are to be refined as the engagement process continues.

The project began with a feasibility study, which is now complete. The team is now working toward advancing successive stages, including detailed design and construction.
