Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre

Location

Burnaby, BC

The City of Burnaby required a new aquatic facility to meet the emerging demands of this fast-growing city.  This project called for a widely appealing facility that could serve a large cross-section of the community.

Completed in 1993, the Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool & Fitness Centre pioneered an innovative concept in aquatic centre design.  Breaking with past design conventions, the facility introduces dramatic natural lighting, transparency and openness to the aquatic user.  The result is a destination aquatic centre that attracts a wide variety of users.

Areas of impact

The facility consists of an indoor pool and two low rectangular buildings.  Between the two rectangular buildings is the roofed main entrance, which is accessed from a round forecourt.  The long foyer area affords views of all areas of the pool.   The entrance area includes not only the reception, but also a multi-purpose and child supervision room.  The swimming area’s curved façade, which varies in height and is fully glazed, looks out onto the surrounding landscape of the park.

Eileen Dailly includes a free form leisure pool containing spray water features and gradual beach-like entry, a physiotherapy programming space and a weight room/fitness centre.
