Heidi Nesbitt

Associate Principal

Heidi Nesbitt, Associate Principal at hcma architecture + design, has over 20 years of experience in designing sustainable, community-driven spaces. Heidi's approach is grounded in the belief that design can be a powerful act of care. Drawing on curiosity, empathy, and values-led practice, she creates processes that empower people to have a voice in shaping their communities.

Heidi’s design specialty is in affordable rental housing for vulnerable populations, families, and elders. She has recently delivered several supportive and social housing projects in Vancouver and across British Columbia, including for SFU, Metro Vancouver, BC Housing, the Lax Kw’alaams, the Snuneymex, and the Gitwangak communities. Her current research into trauma-informed and women-centered design reflects her commitment to creating spaces that empower historically underserved populations.

A highly accomplished technical architect, Heidi is an expert in building code, policy, and green rating systems, including LEED and Passive House. Her commitment to Regenerative Development ensures that all her projects look holistically at their potential to create climate change solutions that empower equitable, diverse communities.

Heidi's recent work reflects her commitment to design that strengthens self-determination and wellbeing, and includes a Healing Centre and Six-plex Housing in X̱wemelch’stn, the Telmexw Healing Centre and Community Housing in Sts'ailes, Upper Stá7mes Hiyam Housing, and the Soonats’ooneh Health Centre. She is also Project Director for the forthcoming Urban Indigenous Youth and Education Centre in Vancouver, a transformative, Indigenous-led urban hub in Vancouver that will bring together education, culture, housing, wellness, and childcare under one roof.
