Royal Roads University Westshore Campus

Location

Langford, BC

Located on Vancouver Island's west shore, Langford is one of Canada's fastest growing communities. To offer residents enhanced opportunities for post-secondary and specialized skills training, it's also the future home of a unique, collaborative educational campus.

Royal Roads University Westshore Campus is the first-of-its-kind partnership between Royal Roads University, the University of Victoria, Camosun College, and the Justice Institute of British Columbia, and will also include programming space for School District No. 62. hcma led the facilitation efforts between these diverse client groups during the feasibility phase of the project (now complete). The study led to the development of a functional program that served as a basis for an Indicative Design supporting a successful business case to the Ministry of Advanced Education.

The five-storey mass timber building will include flexible learning spaces and classrooms, student supports, and Indigenous gathering places.

Pursuing LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) v2 - Design certification, the project takes a whole life approach to minimize carbon emissions. The mass timber structure reduces embodied carbon to the maximum degree possible. A high-performance building envelope, combined with highly efficient fully electric building systems, including a large rooftop photovoltaics array reduces building energy use and operational emissions.

“This unique and innovative campus is a fantastic example of post-secondary institutions collaborating to invest in students, and the programs and infrastructure they need to be future ready for their careers. This new model brings the strengths of four post-secondary institutions closer to people so that they can pursue the education they need to help build a stronger B.C.”

Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training
