Strathcona Gardens REC-REATE

Location

Campbell River, BC

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) engaged a comprehensive consultant team led by hcma architecture + design (hcma) to complete the design of the REC-REATE project at the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex in Campbell River.

The project includes a new natatorium at the northwest point of the site, a retrofit of the current aquatics space into a fitness area, multi-purpose rooms, administration and relocation of concession. The new natatorium includes change rooms, wellness area and main building entry and lobby. Upgrades to the landscape, parking and drive aisles, plus a new ice melt pit are also included in the project.

Our design process was guided by the vision statement developed as part of the original public engagement and Needs Assessment. Key to this vision isthe inclusion of expanded wellness facilities that, through the current partnership with Island Health, have come to play a unique and critical role in the therapy services in the community. The natatorium has been designed to reflect this focus on wellness, arranged to facilitate efficient access to change rooms, treatment rooms, and the range of aquatic programming—including hot pool and dedicated wellness pool. The availability of these specialized program features will broaden access to the facility and greatly enhance wellness offerings in the region as a result.
