How can we make buildings and public spaces more inclusive?

We want to look at spaces, places, architecture and design with fresh eyes – yours.

An essential question around the HCMA studios is: "What's Possible?" For a street? A community plan? A pool? A school? A...home page?

We post images and questions that relate to discussions around the studio. If you see something that sparks your curiosity, tell us what you think. You can check out other people's contributions too by viewing all responses.

A single comment, a debate or a consensus could cause a shift, that shifts everything.

Inclusiveness involves more than architectural design. It is a social phenomenon which depends heavily not only on the openness of design but the types of activities involved in the development and the range of social strata they are aimed for. As an example, a fully open, permeable, accessible development with high-end retails and fnb aiming at middle and upper class is not an inclusive public space, in the essential meaning of the word.

By not making inclusivity just about gender identity. Inclusivenss can be so much bigger and impactful if we look at all parts of the "inclusive umbrella" and not just the hot-button issues.

Educate staff on concepts like sex vs. gender, gender identity vs. sexual orientation, and related terminology so that people have the language to talk about it. Could also create an identifier/sign/symbol that signals that the facility is a safe/welcoming space for LGBTQ2S (provided staff have been educated and there are clear policies and procedures that outline how to handle situations of discrimination or hate).

Everyone loves a moment of interaction with green nature—inside and outside. Everyone enjoys those spaces that bring people together, connect, even sit and relax for a moment. Everyone needs to feel like they are welcome and belong. Designing with these ideas in mind, from varying and thoughtful use of materials, light, colour, furniture, landscaping, even sound, will do more than create spaces that are more inclusive, they will result in environments that make people feel happier, improve health, and last longer.

ask artists for use input! too many 'multi purpose' buildings made poorly for the actual use ie: no sinks when they expect to have art classes. Or a dance (noise area) next to a quiet learning area.

We hope this experiment tilts perspectives and inspires curiosity and conversation about the built environment.
