Include Enable Connect: A framework for maximizing social impact through design
Book by
hcma architecture + design
Include Enable Connect captures hcma's evolving framework for maximizing social impact through design.
Part inspiration, part toolkit, the guide is intended to help create places with meaningful social outcomes. First, by uncovering what matters most to the people we’re designing for, and then through key actions to help embed social performance from the very start.
Written for architects, project teams, and building operators, it offers a structured way to move from intention to action so we can think more clearly about the social role of the places we create.
It represents a body of work developed by hcma over many years. It draws on the thinking and experience of our leadership group and project teams, conversations with collaborators and communities, and a wide field of academic research.

The first half of the guide explores the thinking behind the framework—its principles, intentions, and underpinning academic research. Here, you’ll find insights drawn from social science and lived professional experience, alongside project case studies and examples of the framework in practice.
The second half offers practical ideas, actions, and examples for applying the framework during different stages of a project. Whether you’re beginning to have early goal-setting conversations or you’re deep in technical detail, you’ll find useful prompts to help embed social outcomes into your work.
Together, they balance inspiration with action, combining the why with the how to support you in creating places where social value is embedded from the start.
