Call for proposals

Open call

2026

Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary

The 2026 Tilt in Residence program is now open for applications. Are you wildly courageous and curiosity-driven? Do you ask provocative questions? We invite you to explore new territories with us and our interdisciplinary team.

We welcome creatives, makers, thinkers, tinkerers, performers, innovators, scholars—anyone with an engaging idea, from all disciplines, and at any stage in their practice. We’re looking for creators who are pushing boundaries in their work, asking challenging questions, and are comfortable sharing their passion and process with us.

This year, rather than responding to a predefined theme, applicants are invited to propose a self-directed line of inquiry. We offer a devoted set of peers and a collaborative environment that sparks opportunities to foster new connections and interesting, unexpected curiosities within your work.

To develop your theme, you may use the prompts below as starting points, or feel free to introduce your own ideas however they unravel:

What might you try to understand, test, or unlearn through your residency?

What feels unresolved, unfinished, or in motion in your practice?

What would you explore if there was no predefined outcome?

How does your work relate to people, systems, or environments beyond yourself?

About the residency

The Tilt in Residence program at hcma is experimental and exploratory. It invites people from different fields into our offices and explores what happens when different forms of creativity come together.

In 2026, hcma will host 10-week paid residencies staggered throughout the year in our Victoria, Edmonton, and Calgary offices:

March – May: Victoria

August – October: Edmonton

September – November: Calgary

The residency does not necessarily need to culminate in a specific work or output after 10 weeks, however, we do require you to host a staff workshop related to your project and share a final presentation about your experience and exploration.

Throughout your time with us, we invite you to come into our offices to collaborate with our staff. We offer in-office space for you to work on your project, and encourage opportunities for connection, learning, and cross-pollination with our interdisciplinary team.

Each Tilt resident will receive a fee of $3700 CAD and a project materials budget of $1800 CAD.

For details on how to apply, and what to include in your submission, head over to Submittable. The deadline is January 31, 2026.
